The airport was named for the late Secretary of State John Foster
 
An Eastern Airlines Super Electra, on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, was the first commercial aircraft to land at the new airport.
 
6 airlines operated from Dulles in 1962 and the airport handled 52,800 passengers in the first year
 

In 2002, Dulles has 34 airlines and will serve more than 18 million passengers
