Fuel and Building Efficiency

The Airports Authority has made great strides in emission reduction. Examples of those strides include:

  • Hybrid Vehicles – Reagan National Airport has 22 and Dulles International Airport has 36 hybrid fleet vehicles for a total number of 58 hybrid vehicles.  
  • Airport Bus Fleet – The Airports Authority purchased five fully electric powered buses for use in its fleet of parking shuttles.  This purchase is a major step toward the Airports Authority’s initiative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  
     
Environmental Sustainable Administration
Green Concessions Program

The Airports Authority launched the Green Concessions program, which is aimed at improving sustainability among its concessionaires.  This voluntary program evaluates airport vendors in the following categories: 

  • Commitment and Awareness
  • Waste Reduction and Diversion
  • Energy Usage
  • Water Usage and Conservation
  • Air Quality and Emissions 
  • Social Responsibility

Water and Waste

The Airports Authority increased recycling rates through improved education and outreach by authority personnel.   In 2022, the Airports Authority converted approximately 9,331 tons of municipal solid waste into approximately 5.13 million kilowatts of electricity by a waste-to-energy facility.
