Team Sully is named in honor of Sergeant Steve Sullivan, who served with the Airports Authority Police Department from 1989 to 2009. He joined the department in 1989, and quickly became known simply as "Sully" to the men and women of the department. He rose to the rank of corporal in 2001. Sully was further promoted to sergeant in 2002, serving as a patrol supervisor at Dulles Airport.
He also successfully competed for appointment to the prestigious Special Response Team. Later in his career, he was selected as the commander of the Special Operations Unit, where he served until his passing. Sully was the heart and soul of Special Operations. He handled scheduling, assignment of work, and coordinating special details which involved the integration of both the Special Response Team and Special Operations Unit.
Sully was known as an "Ambassador to the World" in response to his natural ability to converse with anyone, from a subject under arrest, to foreign dignitaries under protective escort.
Sully was friendly and outgoing, along with being unquestionably dedicated to both his unit and department. In honor of his memory, and his tireless efforts in supporting Virginia Special Olympics, the Airports Authority Police Department bestows his name on our sponsored team during the Annual Dulles Day Plane Pull.
