Report recaps a year of transformation for the airports and the local community

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has published its fourth annual Corporate Social Responsibility report to provide the public an in-depth view of the goals, philosophies, initiatives and accomplishments supporting its commitment to serve to the traveling public, contribute to regional economic development and further expand its corporate citizenship.

The report provides an in-depth review of successes in 2022 in six categories: environment, people, community, supplier diversity, governance and safety and security. The nearly 100-page report illustrates a variety of measurable ways the Airports Authority uses its organizational resources for its ongoing commitment to sustainability, passengers, stakeholders and the community.

“We recognize that the well-being of our employees is linked to their quality of life and productivity. We are dedicated to helping our employees be their best at work and at home. Our commitment inspires our employees and workforce,” said Tanisha Lewis, Vice President for Diversity, Inclusion and Social Impact. “We are proud to offer impactful resources, opportunities, and approaches that support our employees and the community.”

Significant achievements and contributions highlighted in the 2022 report include:

  • The Metrorail Silver Line officially opened at Dulles International Airport – providing an alternative option to driving, while linking the airport to Reagan National and more than 98 Metrorail stations throughout the National Capital region.
  • To reduce fossil fuel use and carbon emissions, the airports acquired 50 new hybrid fleet vehicles and installed more than 75 electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Airport businesses were recognized in the Green Concessions Program, established to recognize their commitment to sustainability.
  • Growing the Airports Authority’s presence in the local community to include:
  • Spruce-up days at local schools.
  • Donations of vehicles and other needed supplies to local schools and non-profit organizations.
  • Career fairs for adults and students across various departments such as police, fire and skilled trades.
  • Honoring our veterans by welcoming Honor Flights, participating in events such as Wreaths Across America and installation of a dedicated veterans’ art exhibit at Reagan National Airport.
  • Spending $110M with Small Local Business Enterprises in 2022, which translates to a direct impact on the local economy.
  • Dulles International Airport celebrated its 60th anniversary, growing from serving 54,800 travelers in its first year to over 23 million now. Dulles expanded to 35 airlines and 139 nonstop destinations globally.
  • The Airports Authority’s police and fire and rescue departments responded to a total of 179,000 calls for service at the airports and in surrounding communities.

The annual Corporate Social Responsibility report is produced by the Airports Authority’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Impact, which was formed in 2021. The office is charged with aligning the Airports Authority’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategic initiatives with the organization’s overall business strategy, goals and objectives to ensure it represents and reflects the region and people it serves.

Beginning next year, the Airports Authority will transition its reporting from Corporate Social Responsibility to reflect Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) industry practices.
