In 2018, MWAA launched its Small Business University (SBU) to assist small business enterprises in various stages of growth get to the next level of success and enhance contract readiness. This initiative is geared toward enhancing and improving business acumen and developing capacity for small and diverse businesses. It has three components:
- Navigation to Success Workshop Series: This program is designed to help MWAA certified firms (LDBE, DBE, ACDBE, SBE) learn entrepreneurial and better business practices in order to better compete and perform on MWAA and other contracting opportunities. The program offers a variety of workshops, including Proposal Writing, Marketing and Branding, Access to Capital, and Cost Estimating.
- Jurisdictional Impact Workshop Series: In partnership with key jurisdictional strategic partners in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, this program is designed to provide trade-specific information sharing, networking events, and educational workshops to support MWAA’s mission to drive economic impact in the local community.
- Non-Credit Executive Certificate Program: In partnership with local universities, this multi-week program is designed to develop the potential and capability of MWAA LDBE firms that are seeking to become prime contractors or win larger contracts. Participants are selected via a competitive application process and must commit to classroom participation and completion of homework assignments. The program culminates with a graduation ceremony and networking opportunities with MWAA leadership and prime contractors.
