Special Operations Command

The Special Operations Command is responsible for providing specialized law enforcement services in support of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. The command provides operational support in response to special tactical situations, taxi enforcement operations, and motorcycle patrol operations throughout the airport system.

Special Operations personnel are specially trained to address the unique public safety and transportation challenges associated with a major metropolitan airport environment. These officers support the department’s mission through proactive enforcement initiatives, rapid response capabilities, and specialized operational readiness.

The Special Operations Command also includes the Investigative Services Section, which is responsible for providing investigative services for the Police Department. Detectives assigned to the section conduct criminal investigations and work closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.

Members of the Investigative Services Section are assigned to a variety of regional task forces and partner agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and U.S. Customs task forces. These partnerships strengthen the department’s ability to investigate criminal activity, share intelligence, and support homeland security initiatives throughout the National Capital Region.

Through specialized training, interagency collaboration, and professional service, the Special Operations Command remains committed to protecting the traveling public, airport employees, and critical infrastructure across the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority system.
