Yes, we require all applicants to complete a thorough background investigation. Officers who are certified in Virginia are exempt from the written entrance exam portion of the hiring process.
I am a DCJS certified Officer. Will I have to complete an academy and full Field Training Officer Program?
No, applicants who are certified in Virginia do not need to complete an academy. Lateral applicants are placed in a modified Field Training Officer Program.
*Out of State Laterals that meet the minimum standards will attend an 8 week academy program.

What academy will I attend?
The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy (NVCJA) is located in Ashburn, Virginia, and is 20 weeks long. Recruits will commute to the academy four days a week with general operating hours of 0600 hours - 1630 hours, although occasional evening training is required.
How long is the Field Training Officer Program?
The Field Training Officer (FTO) Program is 60 working days. This equates to about three months with the patrol work schedule. Officers will then be released to solo patrol after successfully completing the FTO Program.
What is the patrol work schedule?
The patrol work schedule is five days on with two consecutive days off. We have permanent non-rotating shifts. Our dayshift is 0600-1400 hours, evening shift is 1400-2200 hours and midnight shift is 2200-0600 hours. You will be assigned to an airport based on operational needs.
