The Special Operations Command is responsible for providing specialized services in response to special tactical situations, taxi enforcement, and motorcycle operations to both Ronald Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport.

Selected Patrol Officers who apply to become a motorcycle officer must first go through an intensive two-week police motorcycle operator's course. After successfully passing the motorcycle training, officers are assigned to this position as full-time motorcycle officers. Motorcycle Officers are responsible for traffic enforcement, traffic control, and provide dignitary, funeral, and mutual aid escorts.

A Detective within the Police Department is assigned to the specialized function of Criminal Investigations. A Detective is responsible for responding to crime scenes, conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations, preparing the required investigative reports, apprehending suspect(s), preparing cases for a successful prosecution, and testifying in court. On occasion, Detectives may travel to various parts of the country to extradite suspect(s) wanted in connection with crimes committed in their jurisdiction.

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department currently has eleven (11) K-9 teams assigned to the Explosive Detection Canine Unit. Upon selection into the unit, corporals will attend the TSA National Explosive Detection Canine Handler Course located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio,Texas.

During this challenging ten (10) week training course, officers will be paired with an explosive detection canine  partner and work in concert  through a variety of training scenarios. These scenarios will include the searches of luggage, vehicles, terminal, cargo, and aircraft sweeps.

Upon successful completion of the training program, handlers will return home to Reagan National and Dulles International Airport with their newly assigned canine partner for additional acclimation training in an airport environment. K9 teams are re-certified by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on an annual basis.
