Spanish flag carrier becomes the first new international airline to add scheduled service from Dulles since beginning of COVID-19 pandemic

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced Wednesday that Iberia Airline will commence new, nonstop service between Spain’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) on June 1, 2022, with four flights per week. Passengers on this new route will travel aboard Airbus A330-family aircraft.

With the announcement, Iberia becomes the first non-U.S. air carrier to begin serving Dulles International Airport since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline had previously announced plans to begin flying to Dulles International in 2020, but the start of service was delayed indefinitely because of the pandemic.

“Iberia is an iconic international brand that will serve to further diversify Dulles International Airport’s legacy of offering unparalleled connectivity from the national Capital Region to Europe and beyond,” said Carl Schultz, acting vice president of Airline Business Development for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. “We applaud Iberia’s commitment to expand international connectivity during the challenges of COVID-19, and we welcome the new option Washington, D.C.-area customers now have for their overseas journeys.”

Iberia’s new trans-Atlantic capital-to-capital route to Washington, D.C., becomes one of nine U.S. gateways for the Spanish carrier. Flights can be purchased now by visiting www.iberia.com/us/.

The schedule for the new service, effective June 1, 2022, is as follows:
