Statement from Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter on the passing of former Virginia Gov. Linwood Holton:

"Former Virginia Gov. Linwood Holton presided over the founding of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority as its first chairman of the board when it was formed in 1986 to operate Washington National and Dulles International airports under a 50-year lease from the federal government.

"Governor Holton actively and effectively presided over the Airports Authority’s founding, growth and long-term success. He led the way to establishing and positioning the Airports Authority’s dual-airport system on the organizational path for success and led the initiation of major investments in vital capital improvements and enhanced passenger services.

"His dedication and leadership led to our airports’ position today as vibrant economic engines for the National Capital Region and their growth as the region’s premier gateway to the nation and the world. We are grateful for his effective stewardship, good humor, wise counsel and countless contributions and accomplishments through the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as we honor his memory and long life of service."
