The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department is one of the largest police departments in Northern Virginia with 225 sworn officers. The Police Department is responsible for enforcing Airports Authority regulations, county codes in three separate county jurisdictions and the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Police Department is a full-service police agency with traditional functions as well as security responsibilities that are unique to the airport environment. Reagan National and Dulles International airports serve more than 47 million passengers per year.

The Dulles Day Plane Pull is an annual event sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. Joe Hurtuk, a retired Deputy Chief with MWAA PD, created the first Plane Pull competition in the world in 1992 at Dulles International Airport. The event was held to benefit Special Olympics athletes, raised almost $15,000 - and started a phenomenon.

The MWAA Police Department does much more than patrol the airport terminals and grounds. Authority Police also provide primary law enforcement to the buildings and properties surrounding Ronald Reagan Washington National and Dulles International Airports and patrol the Dulles Access Road and the Dulles Toll Road. These  are the roads which provide express  travel from I-495 and to I-66 to Dulles International Airport.

The Authority's Emergency Communications Technicians (ECTs) assist the Police and Fire Departments for Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport and the Dulles Toll Road. When emergency assistance is required, they are the first people contacted by the public.

Airport Community Police Academy AnnouncementSpring 2020

The Training Unit is responsible for all in-service training for the police department.  In-service training classes can be taken at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy or within the police department to meet the mandatory training requirements instituted by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Criminal Justice Services for all sworn law enforcement officers.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department has a new 11 ½ acre Firearms Training facility located on the property of Dulles International Airport. This facility is comprised of 3 ranges, a rappel tower and an obstacle course. The department has both full time and collateral duty assignments as Firearms Instructors. Firearms Instructors are certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. The range is operated year round to meet the needs of the department.

Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) manage vehicular and pedestrian traffic in front of the airport terminals for Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport. Their primary responsibility is to promote continuous mobility and prevent gridlock at these vital entries and exits.  Traffic Control Officers are stationed throughout both airports 7 days a week. When they are not directing traffic, TCOs enforce parking regulations. Their ramp assignments vary daily.

 

A Detective within the Police Department is assigned to the specialized function of Criminal Investigations.

Evidence Technicians assist in the collection of latent prints and other evidence, prepare crime and evidence reports, assist with preliminary and follow up investigations, testify in court proceedings regarding the collection of evidence, and provide documentation, including photographs and video recordings.     The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is an Equal Opportunity Employer

  Selected Patrol Officers who apply to become a motorcycle officer must first go through an intensive two-week police motorcycle operator's course.

Bicycle Patrol serves in numerous capacities throughout Reagan National and Dulles International Airports including engaging in crime suppression and rapid response on the airport ramps, in parking structures and outer parking lots.

Segway/T3 Patrol serves in numerous capacities throughout Reagan Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport including engaging in customer safety and crime suppression throughout the airport terminals, offering silent approach to observed or reported crimes in progress and suspicious activity, and providing rapid apprehension if needed.    The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is an Equal Opportunity Employer
