HISTORY OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT

The Fire & EMS Department offers free CPR/AED, First Aid and Fire Extinguisher training courses to members of the airport community.  To schedule a CPR/AED or First Aid course at IAD or DCA, please click here.

    The Captain-Safety & Logistics is responsible for all logistical needs for the department, including procurement and issue of uniforms, equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment.   Additional responsibilities include serving as the department’s Respiratory Protection Program Manager and the chair of all apparatus specification and procurement committees.

  The Special Operations Division maintains training and incident response responsibility for special hazards, unique situations and unique modes of transportation.  This includes hazardous materials, weapons of mass destruction, AeroTrain automated people mover system, Metrorail commuter train system, area passenger and freight rail systems, bulk fuel facilities, area waterways and active shooter events.  Special Operations also coordinates security intelligence gathering and dissemination of potential threat information.

  MISSION

  Richard Bonnett Battalion Fire Chief, EMS The Emergency Medical Services Division consists of a Battalion Chief and 6 EMS Captains. The Battalion Chief of EMS is assigned as part of the Fire Headquarters Staff and each airport has an EMS Captain assigned to each of the three 24 hour shifts.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is located in Chantilly, VA and is twenty-six miles from downtown Washington, DC.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is located in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. The Fire & EMS Department operates out of Fire Station 301 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Personnel provide a wide range of emergency services including aircraft rescue and firefighting, structural firefighting, emergency medical services-both basic and advanced life support, hazardous materials response, and river rescue.

The mission of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s Fire Marshal's Office is to prevent the inception of fire and hazardous conditions through timely and professional educational, enforcement, inspection, investigative and plans review efforts essential to the safety and wellbeing of all airport employees and the traveling public.
