The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) conducts a wide variety of environmental studies to identify potential environmental impacts associated with proposed development projects.  These studies are done in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, the regulations of the President's Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) for NEPA compliance, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Orders 1050.1F and 5050.4B.

Six overarching goals will highlight the Airports Authority’s commitment to sustainability:

This Report highlights our organization's commitment to environmental performance, workforce effectiveness, community engagement, supplier diversity, ethical practices, safety, security, governance, and quality of service to the traveling public.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is working in many ways to minimize impacts on the environment while serving millions of travelers. Good environmental stewardship begins with Federal and State regulatory compliance in our operations and construction. Here are some ways we go beyond what’s required to do things that make good sense for the planet: Saving Energy

  Building Codes: The Authority’s Building Code Department is an independent Building Department within the Commonwealth of Virginia and enforces the Virginia Construction Code (VCC). It is the Authority having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for all Authority property. Policies and procedures are outlined in the Building Code Manual.   FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT FORGENERAL AVIATION FIXED BASE OPERATOR FACILITIES  The Federal Aviation Administration has approved the Environmental Assessment (EA) and has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the project known as Expansion of the Fixed Base Operator Facilities at Washington Dulles International Airport. The project consists of the development of additional general aviation facilities by Signature Aviation on approximately 20 acres of airport land adjacent to the existing Signature FBO.
