Richard Bonnett
Fire & EMS Chief

The Airports Authority's Fire & EMS Department was formed from the Federal Aviation Administration's Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Branch when the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority was established in 1987 to operate Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports. Today, the department is a full-service department and a partner with other regional departments in protecting the National Capital Region.

The department maintains a highly trained workforce through intense, comprehensive training programs in aviation, fire prevention/suppression, pre-hospital medical care, and other specialized fields.  The department participates in the National Fire Protection Association Professional Firefighter Qualifications Certification Program. All personnel are certified Emergency Medical Technicians through the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The department’s Fire Code Enforcement Division strives to prevent incidents that compromise the safety of those working and visiting the airport campuses.  This is accomplished by participating in the design process for Airports Authority projects, conducting regular safety inspections, and providing fire prevention/life safety training in a variety of venues.

I encourage individuals with a passion to serve others to consider a career as a firefighter with the Airports Authority's Fire & EMS Department.  We seek highly qualified individuals who wish to provide the highest quality services possible to the flying public, our airport communities, and the citizens and visitors of the region.
