With passenger projections exceeding last year’s record volumes at Reagan National and Dulles International airports, anticipation for the busy summer travel season is heating up. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is offering guidance and tips for passengers to enjoy the newest amenities, reduce stress and save time in line – especially when returning on an international flight.  

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced Tuesday that Avelo Airlines will begin new nonstop service between Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on July 12, 2024. Avelo will operate this route twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays, utilizing Boeing next-generation 737 aircraft.

Airline and airport executives, staff and passengers gathered Wednesday at Dulles International Airport to celebrate the launch of Sun Country Airlines' nonstop service from Washington, D.C., to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on a 186-passenger aircraft. The flight departed from Gate B49 under a sunny sky.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board of directors Wednesday approved terms of a new Airport Use Agreement and Premises Lease to govern its business relationship with airlines at Reagan National and Dulles International airports. The 15-year pact, which includes a new $9 billion capital construction program, must be signed by airlines representing a majority of the airports’ flights, before taking effect on January 1, 2025.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced Wednesday 15 new concessions will begin the construction process at Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport in 2024. These food, beverage and retail brands represent the latest awards of a multi-year program to redevelop more than 80 concessions at both airports.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board of directors voted to approve the selection of Felice C. Smith as the Airports Authority’s vice president and secretary at a special meeting Wednesday. The board’s action will become effective on March 10. 

To combat human trafficking through its airports, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced Thursday that it is partnering with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and its Blue Lightning Initiative. The initiative trains aviation personnel to identify and report potential traffickers and victims.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board of directors elected Thorn Pozen to serve as its chairperson and Mark Uncapher to serve as vice chairperson for 2024 at its meeting Wednesday. The board also re-elected Monica Hargrove as secretary to the Airports Authority. All three will serve one-year terms in office beginning in January.

With passenger activity levels rising in 2023, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is preparing for significant travel through Washington’s airports in the coming weeks. During peak times around holidays from Veterans Day through New Year's Day, passengers may experience heavily congested airport-area roads, limited parking availability and bustling terminals. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced today that Aeromexico will begin new nonstop service between Mexico City (MEX) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on July 1, 2024.

Metro and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) today commemorated a major milestone topping one million customers at the Washington Dulles International Airport Metrorail Station since opening in November.  During a celebration event at the station, Metro and MWAA surprised a lucky traveler as the ceremonial one-millionth customer to go through the Dulles International Airport Station. Ivy Cheng arrived at the station greeted with cheers, Silver Line memorabilia, and gifts provided by Metro, Dulles International Airport and United Airlines.
