Alexandria, VA— U.S. Airways' low-cost carrier service, MetroJet, began serving Washington Dulles International Airport on December 2 with daily flights to Orlando. MetroJet provides three daily non-stop flights to Orlando and adds a fourth to that city as well as two new daily non-stop flights to Tampa on December 22. On January 6 next year, MetroJet will expand service to Fort Lauderdale with two daily non-stop flights.

Of the 50 largest airports in the world, Washington Dulles International Airport was the fastest growing in 1999, according to the Airports Council International World Headquarters in Switzerland. Nearly 20 million (19,796,939) passengers used the airport in 1999. This is a four million increase in the number of passengers over 1998.

The annual "tug of war" between human and machine will take place Saturday, June 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Washington Dulles International Airport as part of the Dulles Day Family Festival featuring the 8th Annual Plane Pull.

Bolstered by an 18 percent increase in weekly international departures this year over 1999, Washington Dulles International Airport ranks fifth in the nation for transatlantic service this summer, according to analysis prepared by Simat, Hellienson and Eichner (SH&E), an aviation consulting firm.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has awarded a $95 million contract to Turner Construction Company to build two parking garages at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority opens a second new parking garage at Washington Dulles International Airport on April 15th, 2003. This is the second garage opened at the Airport and is located directly across the main entrance to the Terminal. There are approximately 3,600 parking spaces in Daily Garage 2, and 4,600 spaces will be added with the opening of Daily Garage 1.

Washington Dulles International Airport was recognized for its efforts in maintaining a safe and operational airport during the recent winter. Beginning Monday, April 19, 2004, Runway 12-30, the east-west runway, will close until construction is completed this summer.

Washington Dulles International Airport opened a new covered bridge from Daily Garage 2 to the Terminal on Tuesday, May 11th. "This newly-enclosed walkway will give our customers a direct connection to the Terminal and protect them from the elements," said President/CEO James E. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has opened several “pet relief areas” at Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports. These areas give travelers a new option when their pet or service animal needs a bathroom break while at the airport. The typical layout of each pet relief area at Dulles includes a mockup of a fire hydrant placed on artificial “K-9 grass” in a fenced-in area. The grass was developed to be paw-friendly to our four-legged friends and easy to maintain.

A new ramp and flyover bridge connecting the eastbound Dulles Airport Access Highway to I-495 will open to traffic on Saturday, September 8, 2012. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is conducting an emergency preparedness exercise at Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday, May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 12:00 p.m. A simulated aircraft accident will test the Airport’s emergency plan and provide hands-on training to airport and mutual aid emergency response personnel. To ease congestion and increase convenience for drivers, 19 toll-lanes along the Dulles Toll Road will be converted from “exact change” to “E-ZPass only” over the next year, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates the road, announced Wednesday. During the conversion project, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, coin baskets will be removed and replaced by upgraded E-ZPass infrastructure.  Conversions are scheduled for unattended “exact change” lanes at the main toll plaza and exit ramps along the roadway.

The process, which began with a “request for information” to gather ideas and gauge interest from real estate developers and the hospitality industry, is seeking  input on the possible development of three sites – one adjacent to the terminal building, and two larger sites within a two-to-five minute drive from the terminal.
