Runway 12-30 was built in 1960 and opened along with the Airport in 1962.  Additions to the original runway included a 500-foot extension in 1992 and new asphalt shoulders in 1998.  Due to its age and use, the original runway pavement needed to be replaced.  Also, additional drainage features and strength improvements were needed to accommodate aircraft much heavier than those estimated in the origina

Roadway Improvements

This walkway provides passengers with an alternative path between the Main Terminal and Concourses A and B.  It is equipped with moving sidewalks in each direction.  The walkway crosses underneath a set of airplane taxiways and has escalators and elevators at each end.  The present-day Mobile Lounges and future 

This project provided two five-level parking garages close to the Terminal for daily parking.  These are the first garages constructed at the Airport.  Previously, daily parking existed in the surface lot in front of the airport along with hourly parking.  That lot has been converted to hourly parking and valet.

In response to continuing growth in international air service at Washington Dulles International Airport, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority opened the International Arrivals Building (IAB) in 1991, when Dulles was serving approximately 1.4 million international passengers a year.

A new, updated look for a temporary facility

The first phase to expand Concourse B added four airline gates to the west end of the building and was completed in April 2003. The addition is approximately 440 feet long and provides approximately 131,000 square feet of functional space. The final phase of the expansion of Concourse B completes the build-out of the facility to the west, providing 15 additional aircraft gates attached to a two-level concourse building.

The original Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) at Dulles opened along with the Airport in 1962.  Since then, there has been tremendous growth in the number of flights and airline gates.  As new runways are built, a taller, more centrally positioned tower provides views all around the Airport for the safe guidance of aircraft.  The facilities inside the new tower were planned with present and future needs in mind.
