Opened November 2021

The debut of two new security screening checkpoints happened on November 9, 2021, immediately following the closure of three smaller checkpoints that had served Terminals B and C (now known as Terminal 2) since 1997. At opening, a total of 23 screening lanes became operational, with the ability to expand to 28 lanes. Read the full press release here.

About the New Security Checkpoints Project

The New Security Checkpoints are conveniently located between National Hall and walkways from the Metrorail station and parking garages. The new 50,000 square-foot checkpoints expanded screening capacity and created a seamless, free-flowing environment in Terminal 2 (Gates B10-E59), including the new 14-gate concourse (Gates E46-E59).

After clearing the new checkpoints, passengers are able to move freely between gate areas and enjoy all the amenities the airport offers without having to be re-screened. The resulting terminal reconfiguration provides passengers an improved post-security experience — alleviating gate area congestion while expanding access to a variety of shopping, dining and seating options.

The two New Security Checkpoint buildings were built above the existing Arrivals/Bag Claim roadway.

Project Journey: Transforming the Passenger Experience

Under the Project Journey construction program, two new 50,000-square-foot security checkpoint buildings serving Gates B10-E59 replaced three smaller checkpoints – increasing the post-security space to include all of National Hall and its premier shops and restaurants for ticketed travelers. In addition, a new 14-gate concourse replaced Gate 35X – ending the need for travelers to ride buses to board regional jets parked outside. New concourse amenities include jetbridges, holdrooms, mother's care rooms, concessions, an indoor pet relief area and an American Airlines Admirals Club lounge.
